YSU Football Mourns Loss of Former Penguin Darius Shackleford

The Youngstown State football family is heartbroken about the loss of one its recent student-athletes, Darius Shackleford, who passed away following a car accident late Saturday evening. Shackleford was a wide receiver with the program from 2015-20.

Statement From Head Coach Doug Phillips: Darius was not only a great player, but he was an even better teammate and friend. His smile and energy were infectious. He not only affected so many within the football department in a positive way but also crossed paths with the entire athletic department. We will all carry fond memories of him the rest of our lives. Our entire team and staff extends our deepest condolences to his family.

Shackleford Career Summary: Played in 18 games during his career…highlighted by 10 contests and four starts in 2018…he had 11 receptions for 213 yards and two touchdowns in 2018…caught touchdown passes against Valpariso and UNI…had a season-best four catches for 42 yards at Western Illinois…had a career-best 73 yards on two grabs vs. UNI, including a 62-yard touchdown catch…as a senior in 2019, missed the season after tearing his ACL in fall camp.
