CLEMSON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women’s tennis team fell on the road at Clemson 6-1 in the two teams’ spring opener on Friday evening at The Duckworth Family Tennis Facility in Clemson, S.C.
It was only the second match between the Chants and the Tigers in the two programs’ histories with the last meeting coming back in 2007.
Coastal jumped out to an early 1-0 match lead with wins at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions to open the match.
The freshman duo of Mathilde Tranberg and Jesse Hollins defeated the team of Jenna Thompson and Sophia Hatton 6-4 at the No. 3 doubles spot while the veteran team of Jessie Mount and Somer Dalla-Bona won 6-3 over the tandem of Lana Spiek and Cristina Mayorova at the No. 1 flight to earn the doubles point for the visiting Chants.
The Chants fell in straight sets on courts No. 1, 2, 3, and 6 to start singles play as the Tigers clawed their way out to a 4-1 lead in the win.
On the No. 4 court, Tranberg pushed her match to three sets, as she bounced back from a first set 6-1 loss to take the second set 6-3. However, in the third set, Clemson’s Cristina Mayorova held off Tranberg for the 6-4 third set win and match victory.
At No. 5, Jurkova battled Mills for each point before suffering a 7-5, 6-5 straight-set loss to allow the Tigers to complete the singles sweep and pick up the 6-1 match win.
The Chanticleers (0-1) will return to action tomorrow afternoon versus South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. The match is set for a 3 p.m. start time.
