Why Renault Are Giving Fernando Alonso Countless Testing Chances Ahead of F1 Return

Fernando Alonso is returning back to Formula 1 next year driving for Renault. The two-time world champion took a break from Formula 1 and left McLaren at the end of 2018. During his break, he raced in the 24 hour Le Mans, Indy 500 and the Dakar Rally.

Alonso believes that his experiences away from Formula 1 have made him more matured and skilled. So when Renault F1 team approached him, he acted on the offer promptly.  He has been preparing for his comeback in 2021.

Meanwhile, Marcin Budkowski from Renault was asked about Fernando Alonso’s preparation at the Friday Press Conference ahead of Turkish GP. Budkowski stated that Alonso has been working on getting back in shape and rhythm.  Hence, he is taking on every opportunity to drive the car.

Fernando Alonso pushing to prepare for his comeback

According to Budkwoski, Fernando drove the 2018 car for two days in Bahrain and will repeat that in Abu Dhabi over the weekend. Alonso also completed a filming day on the 2020 car. Budkwoski said, “He wants more days in the car, he wants more days in the car to get used to the team, to get used to the systems, the procedures, to fine tune his seating position, the steering wheel, everything.

He also mentioned that Alonso is displaying an inspiring level of enthusiasm and determination. He is going out of his way and asking everybody, pushing them and spending time with them to understand them. This also helps the staff to stay motivated for the future.

Budkwoski explained that the idea of these testing is to help understand him the car. “to work with him on things like the steering wheel, his favourite button position, how he wants to be able to activate all the differences in the car, practise our procedures,” he added.

He also clarified that the 2018 car posses the same DNA as the 2020 car. Therefore, even a 2018 car helps him get used to Renault and even though it’s two years old, it is certainly beneficial.

Fernando Alonso has already been significantly involved with the team. He is providing his input to improve the car and helping learn the current drivers. His experience and skill could be a great asset to Renault in helping them fight for podiums next season.
