Viking Golf Team Looks Ahead To A Busy Month Of April

Portland State is preparing for a busy month of April as the Vikings will play in four events over the next three weeks. That is a far cry from the past year when PSU went from Mar. 10, 2020 to Mar. 6, 2021 with no competition.
The Vikings have only recently begun competing this spring. They have now played in one individual event, as well as taking a third-place finish at last week’s Anuenue Spring Break Classic as they head into April.
Next Monday and Tuesday, PSU will play in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, AZ. The 20-team event will consist of 54 holes and includes seven Big Sky Conference teams. This will be the 12th straight season the Vikings have played in the Cowgirl Classic. Portland State won the event back in 2011 behind individual medalist Britney Yada. That win came just prior to winning the 2011 Big Sky Championship.
Jasmine Cabajar tied for sixth in the Cowgirl Classic in its last playing, back in 2019, with a one-under par 215 total.
The day following the tournament, Portland State will meet up with Montana State in an individual match. The Big Sky foes will play 18 holes at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, AZ. There will be both individual standings and head-to-head competition with five matches.
Portland State will move on to participate in the Fresno State Classic, Apr. 12-13, at Copper River Country Club in Fresno. The Vikings come home to host the Big Sky Conference Championship on Apr. 19-21 at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla, OR.
The Vikings got solid play from Cabajar, a senior, at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic. She came in tied for third with 78-72-71=221. She currently leads PSU in scoring with a 74.40 stroke average. Also starring for the Vikings was freshman Franca Polla. In the second round, Polla posted a 68, one off the school record and matching the best ever for a Viking freshman.
Also competing for the Vikings next week will be senior Valerie Hernandez, junior McKenna Maser, redshirt freshman Katie Harris and freshman Mariana Garcia Rosette.
