Vanden High girls clinch tie for tennis crown – The Reporter

The Vanden High girls tennis team clinched at least a tie for the Monticello Empire League championship by defeating Fairfield 8-0 on Wednesday.

Vanden completed its league season with a record of 9-1. Rodriguez and Vacaville will play a rain makeup match on Monday. If Rodriguez wins, the Mustangs will share the championship with Vanden. If Vacaville wins, Vanden will have the title to itself.

Vanden head coach Stan Lewis said, “We are just happy to have been able to give the girls across the league the chance to get outside and compete safely in a sport they love. We saw a lot of happy faces during the season.”

The Vikings won all their matches on Wednesday in straight sets.

Sasha Smith won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Maya Khanna won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Delaney Ramsell took No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Jasmin Yabut was victorious at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Paige VanPelt triumphed at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Camille Arca took No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Maritza Garcia-Jeanelle Delacruz won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, and Hailey Lam-Danali Hardwick won by that same score in No. 2 doubles.

Neither team fielded a pair for No. 3 doubles.

Rodriguez 6, Armijo 3

Rodriguez improved to 8-1 in MEL play with its 6-3 win over Armijo at Armijo on Thursday.

The win kept the Mustangs’ hopes alive for a co-championship with Vanden if they defeat Vacaville on Monday.

Armijo fell to 4-6.

Armijo got wins at No. 1 singles from Flora Wan (6-1, 6-3), No. 2 singles from Faustina Wan (6-0, 6-2) and Guadalupe Hernandez at No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-2).

Rodriguez picked up victories at No. 3 singles from Bella Connerley (6-4, 6-3), Riley Mark at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0), Emily Hefner at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-0), Jacki Laffey-Kayla Lee at No. 1 doubles (6-1, 6-1), Juliana Roxas-Danielle Murphy at No. 2 doubles (6-2, 6-0) and Shayla Prasad-Natalia Fabian (6-2, 6-4).
