SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah men’s golf program just got a big boost as the David. S Layton Golf Academy is now accessible and fully operational.

Prior to the building of the new facility, members from the Utah Athletic department and head coach Garrett Clegg toured five division one golf facilities to get a better understanding of what was required in Salt Lake City.

The two-story facility sits on a 7,000 square foot block directly across the street from the football facility. It is filled with the latest state of the art technology to help its athletes perfect their golf swing and hopefully win more tournaments.

When you walk through the front door, you are immediately faced with a gigantic 4,000 square foot putting green that consists of 11 different hole locations and various slopes. Surrounding the putting green lies various surfaces intended to represent different playing surfaces. The green speeds vary from 10.5 to 12.

The Putt View System, which sits above the south-west corner of the putting surface assists the players in mastering the putting technique.

To the north of the putting green are two driving bays. The two bays allow the athletes to play full-rounds regardless of the time of year. Members of the golf team will be personally fitted for golf clubs through the use of the state of the art motion capture technology.

“So for the program, it’s incredible for our players and skill development, they can truly enhance every aspect of their golf game 365 days a year. It’s a huge boon for us recruiting,” Clegg told KSL Sports. “We can now have a home on campus, not just any home. We have the latest greatest technologies, the state of the art equipment that can truly help improve and enhance anyone’s game. So I think holistically for the entire golf program, long term, it’s a massive game changer because now we’re a program that takes golf seriously and all you have to do is is walk past us on Guardsman Way to realize that golf is a real big deal at university Utah.”

Locker rooms, a kitchen, lounge space, a table tennis table, desks and, coaches offices also exist inside the facility.

Without question, the new golf facility will help the program from a recruiting standpoint. It will also allow the members of the golf team a facility that they can call home.

Clegg hopes the athletes spend a significant amount of time inside the facility. It will be open for use between the hours of 6 a.m. to midnight.
