The youth of Great Southern tennis stood the tough test at the Country Carnival | The Times

Country Carnival Tennis team events were held from January 7 to the 10th at the Kensington Lawn Tennis Club.

This is a great experience for all juniors players as most have never experienced playing tennis on grass before.

This year the Great Southern Tennis Association managed to send three teams to the carnival.

The 14 and under boys team were Dylan Wilson (captain) Inman Valley Tennis Club, Jarred McCombe Inman Valley Tennis Club, Jack Prosser Victor Harbor Tennis Club and Mitchell Schuette Inman Valley Tennis Club.

Three players from this team had never played at country carnival level and playing on grass was a challenging experience. The boys finished fourth overall.

The 14 and under girls team included Tyla Millard (captain) Victor Harbor Tennis Club, Hayley Modra Victor Harbor Tennis Club, Ella Watters Normanville Tennis Club and Danika Millard Victor Harbor Tennis Club.

The girls had a tough start as two of the team are younger players and with limited girls teams were put in a combined 14 and 16s team.

The girls only lost two matches overall and both of those games went down to matches, as both teams were on equal sets. Awesome effort by the girls!

Under 16 boys Benny Seidel, Jack Pacitti, Sam Hrstich and Hamish McCombe.

The 16 and under boys team were Benny Seidel (captain) Victor Harbor Tennis Club, Jack Pacitti Myponga/Sellicks Tennis Club, Sam Hrstich Myponga/Sellicks Tennis Club and Hamish McCombe Inman Valley Tennis Club.

The boys played really well over the events and finished third overall. Three of the team were first time country carnival players.

The Individual events were scheduled for January 11, but due to the hot weather all doubles were cancelled.

Some singles still went ahead. Benny Seidel finished his grand final and narrowly lost to Lochie Maywald, 6-7, 5-7.

Benny finished as runner up of the under 16 boys singles.

Under 14 boys Dylan Wilson, Jack Prosser, Mitchell Schuette, Jarred McCombe.

Dylan Wilson won his first match in a close one 7-5, then was into his second and was down 2-1 when the heat policy was implemented, due to the temperature reaching over 36°c.

Jarred McCombe lost his first round 2-6, then played in the consolation round and went down 3-6.

Danika Millard and Hayley Modra both made it to the grand final in the 12 and under girls before the heat policy.

Tyla Millard made it to the semi finals before the heat policy. All girls were disappointed they couldn’t finish their matches.

The Great Southern Tennis Association would like to thank the parents who took the time to take their children to the Country Carnival.

It is a great experience for all players and hopefully next year the association will be able to encourage more players to participate.
