North Central won the eight-man Division 2 State Football Championship on Saturday, edging Portland Saint Patrick 70-48. Luke Gorzinski rushed for 313 yards and four touchdowns for the Jets, and threw for 156 yards and three other scores. The 118 points set a new record for an eight-man state title game. Both teams have played without multiple starters due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing restrictions.
In the eight-man Division title match, Adrian Lenawee Christian shut out Suttons Bay 47-0.
The 11-player championships will take place next weekend. No Upper Peninsula team is involved.
Bowling Green State University completed a weekend sweep of the Northern Michigan University hockey team with a 6-2 victory on Saturday night. Jett Jungels scored his first college goal in the first period for the Wildcats, and Vincent de May scored on a power play in the second quarter.
