Syed Mushtaq Ali: Arjun Tendulkar makes debut as Mumbai crash out | Cricket News

MUMBAI: Almost 32 years after he made his debut for Mumbai at just 15 against Gujarat in a Ranji Trophy game at the Wankhede Stadium, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar’s son, left-arm pacer Arjun Tendulkar won his first cap for Mumbai.
On Friday, Tendulkar played his first game for the Mumbai senior team in a Group E game of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy against Haryana at the MCA’s ground in BKC here. However, unlike his famous father, who started off with a hundred, the 21-year-old’s debut wasn’t ideal — after remaining not out on 0 while batting at No. 11, the youngster conceded 34 runs in three overs and took a wicket, as Mumbai crashed out of the tournament after being thrashed by eight wickets, their third defeat on the bounce.
Having now played at least one game for his state team, Tendulkar has thus qualified for the IPL auctions next month. He was a late addition to the squad, along with another pacer Krutik Hanagavadi, by the Salil Ankola-led selection committee, after the BCCI allowed 22 players to be selected due to bio-secure norms.
In the last few years, Arjun, starting from the under-14 level, has played for Mumbai in all age-group teams, and even played for the Mumbai senior team in invitational tournaments. He was a part of the India India Under-19 team which toured Sri Lanka in 2018 for two four-day matches, and has been a regular in Team India and Mumbai Indians’ net sessions.
In 2017, bowling to England’s batsmen at Lord’s, Arjun had badly injured Jonny Bairstow’s toe with a searing yorker.
