  • Steve Smith was banned for 12 months from international cricket and was also handed a 12-month captaincy ban
  • The former Australian skipper’s captaincy ban ended in March this year with talks of him resuming captaincy duties ongoing
  • Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings has however suggested that Smith is not the only candidate being considered for the role

Ever since Steve Smith was removed as Australia’s captain from all formats post his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal, Aaron Finch and Tim Paine have done a good job leading the team in limited-overs and Test cricket. Smith was not only banned for 12 months from international cricket but was also given a 12-month captaincy ban which ended in March earlier this year.

Currently, while talks are ongoing about re-appointing Smith as the Australian captain, Cricket Australia (CA) chairman Earl Eddings has opined that Smith is not the only candidate in contention for the captain’s job.

“First of all we’ve got three great captains in Meg, Aaron and Tim, We’ve got some great young leaders coming through. So it’s not just about should Steve take over, it’s about what’s best overall. Steve’s a great young man and he was a good captain when he was there. Like any succession there’s planning in place. Have we sat down as a board specifically to discuss the next captain? No we haven’t.

“But I think over a period of time we’ve given a range of people options to be vice-captain, Matthew Wade was already vice-captain, so we’re seeing that and it gives us an opportunity to look at the future leaders of Australian cricket. We’ll be guided by the recommendations of the selection panel, they always come back to our board at the right time with their recommendation, and we’ll go through it in detail when they do that,” Eddings told ESPNcricinfo.

Australian coach Justin Langer earlier said that there was a bit of process left before Smith could resume his duties as Australia’s Test captain.

“Of course, we talked about a number of things,” said Langer to Fox Sports. “We’ve got so many options. Steve Smith has done a brilliant job in the past. There’s probably a bit of a process we need to go through until he becomes captain again. We’ll go through that.”

Both Finch and Paine have won praise from the cricket fraternity with the way they have led the team in different formats. It remains to be seen whether Smith will once again be handed the captaincy mantle for all formats or will Australia have different captains for different formats.
