Sania Mirza, Andreja Klepac make Dubai Tennis Championships Round of 16

Sania Mirza and Andreja Klepac beat Shelby Rogers and Saisai Zheng in straight sets in the Round of 32 in Dubai.

Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza and Slovenian partner Andreja Klepac progressed to the Round of 16 of the women’s doubles at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Sunday.

Mirza-Klepac beat the American-Chinese duo of Shelby Rogers and Saisai Zheng 6-1, 6-3.

This is Sania Mirza’s second tournament in as many weeks since she returned to the court after the COVID-19 pandemic. She had reached the semi-finals of the Qatar Open last week with Andreja Klepac.

Sania and Andreja began in fine fashion in Dubai, breaking Rogers-Zheng in the opening game of the match.

The Indo-Slovenian pair then broke their opponents once more in the third game and held both of their service games to race to a 4-0 lead.

Mirza-Klepac then had two break points in the fifth but could not convert either of them, as Rogers-Zheng won their first game of the match.

However, the Indo-Slovenian duo broke for a third time in the seventh game to soon clinch the first set 6-1.

In the second set, Mirza-Klepac were the first ones to blink, conceding their serve for the first time in the third game. But they hit back in the very next game to level the set at 2-2.

Crucially, Sania Mirza and Andreja Klepac broke Rogers-Zheng in the eighth game to take a decisive 5-3 lead and then held serve to see out the match comfortably.
