Preston Summerhays: Good at Golf (Advances to Maridoe Championship Sunday)

Sun Devil men’s golf fall of 2020 signee Preston Summerhays is going to be special as a Sun Devil.

Until then, he remains special as a high school amateur golfer and has a chance to rack up another big-time win Sunday.

Summerhays has advanced to the highly competitive Maridoe Amateur Championship being held in Carrollton, Texas. Ranked fifth in the Golfweek Boys computer rankings, he will tee off Sunday for a chance at the title.

“The Maridoe Family and I are gratified that that the elite of elite of amateur golf assembled to play the Maridoe Amateur Championship,” says Albert D Huddleston, Owner of the Maridoe Golf Club. “Tomorrow we will enjoy a great contest between Preston Summerhays and Luke Potter, who I consider both friends, to crown our Champion.”

The 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur champion and the youngest winner of the Sunnehanna Amateur when he took home the title in 2019, Summerhays grabbed the No. 8 seed and topped USC freshman Shane Ffrench in the Round of 64 4 & 3. He then took out Oklahoma’s Patrick Welch 1-up and beat SMU’s Mcclure Meissner 4 & 3. Meissner won the Southern Amateur at Maridoe over the summer.

Next up was a quarterfinal win over No. 1 seed Will Holcomb in 19 holes and then a semifinal win over Christopher Gotterup 3 & 2.

Summerhays tied for seventh in stroke play with an 8-over 224 (71-80-73).
