ST. CLOUD — With a sweep in singles competition, the Willmar boys tennis team won its first match of the year, beating St. Cloud Apollo/Sauk Rapids in St. Cloud.
There was a double forfeit at No. 3 doubles, resulting in the unusual final score.
“It was carried on the back of the singles players,” said Cardinals head coach Forrest Rice. “They seemed a lot more relaxed, it seemed like they were having more fun and not stressing out. They just played smarter games and they’re getting better at reading their opponents.
“It’s paying off for sure.”
At No. 2 singles, Jordy Contreras bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Braedyn Leeb, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. Then at No. 1, Jorge Zelaya-Velasquez fought off a tight second set from Cole Sowada to get the 6-3, 7-5 victory. Andrew Ziebarth and David Thaden also won in singles for Willmar.
The Cardinals return home Friday to host St. Cloud Tech.
