- Here is a look at 3 players who might be on their way out of MI ahead of the new season
Reigning champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will once again start as one of the favourites in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. Mumbai Indians lifted their record fifth title in UAE last year and have one of the best squads among all eight teams in the competition.
With a mini-auction ahead of the start of IPL 2021, Mumbai Indians would not like to make a lot of changes to their squad which looks well-equipped in all departments. However, Rohit Sharma & Co. might want to get in a few new faces at the auction to further strengthen their squad and some players will have to be released to make way for the new ones.
Despite missing the services of captain Rohit Sharma towards the end of the league stages and of senior pacer Lasith Malinga for the full season, Mumbai Indians dominated the proceedings in IPL 2020 to lift their fifth title. Ahead of the IPL 2021 player auction, here is a look at players Mumbai Indians might release.
1) Chris Lynn
The Australian opener was roped in by Mumbai Indians at the auction last year at his base price of Rs 2 crore after being released by Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Lynn was left to warm the bench throughout IPL 2020 as he did not get a single game for Mumbai Indians. With Quinton de Kock likely to be the first-choice opener with Rohit in 2021 as well, Lynn might be released by the franchise. Nonetheless, Lynn has been in top-notch form in Big Bash League so far this season with 273 runs from 6 games, striking at 145.99. He might find a buyer at the auction if he is released by MI.
2) Mitchell McClenaghan
The New Zealand pacer has been a great servant for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and has played a key role in their success, over the years. He might not have been MI’s first-choice pacer but has managed to deliver every time he has been called upon. In 2019, McClenaghan played only 5 games and picked up three wickets while last season he was not used at all. He can be another overseas player on his way out of MI with Lasith Malinga likely to return and Sherfane Rutherford also in the squad.
3) Nathan Coulter-Nile
Another Australian player who Mumbai Indians might let go ahead of the player auction for IPL 2021. Coulter-Nile played only 7 games last season for Mumbai Indians due to injury issues and the impressive performances of James Pattinson, who seemed to have found his old mojo in the tournament. Coulter-Nile picked only 5 wickets and scored 25 runs in seven matches last season. Mumbai Indians might release him to make some funds available for the upcoming auction.
