Patriot League GEICO Football Players of the Week Announced (3.15.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Holy Cross and Lafayette split the four Patriot League GEICO Football Weekly Awards when the League office announced the first set of honors for the 2021 spring season on Monday.   
 
Holy Cross senior defensive lineman Jordan Jackson was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while junior placekicker Derek Ng collected special teams player of the week honors.
 
Lafayette senior quarterback Cole Northrup received Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week accolades, and freshman defensive lineman Marcus Joseph earned rookie of the week following the first week of the season.
 
Lafayette senior placekicker/punter Jeffrey Kordenbrock and junior defensive lineman Malik Hamm, along with Lehigh sophomore defensive back TyGee Leach received honorable mentions for their week one performances.
 
The Patriot League football players of the week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information directors, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

PATRIOT LEAGUE GEICO FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cole Northrup, Lafayette, Sr., QB, St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine
*Northrup completed 9-of-14 passes for 141 yards and one touchdown pass with no interceptions in Lafayette’s 24-10 victory over Colgate.
*The senior signal-caller completed passes to five different receivers, including passes of 20 yards or more to three different receivers.
*His 12-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Steven Stilianos in the fourth quarter helped seal the Leopards’ victory.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE GEICO FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jordan Jackson, Holy Cross, Sr., DL, Oakland, Calif./Bishop O’Dowd
*Jackson finished with five tackles, including 2.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in Holy Cross’s 20-3 win at Lehigh.
*In the first quarter, Jackson forced a fumble at the Lehigh nine-yard line that the Crusaders recovered, leading to their first touchdown of the game.
*Jackson and the Crusaders held the Mountain Hawks to 137 yards of total offense and eight first downs.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE GEICO FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Derek Ng, Holy Cross, Jr., PK, Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman
*Ng connected on a pair of field goals and both of his extra-point attempts in the Crusaders’ 20-3 victory over Lehigh on Saturday.
*His 51-yard field goal in the third quarter was the longest in the Holy Cross football program and Goodman Stadium history. He was four yards shy of the Patriot League record. *He also connected on a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter. 
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE GEICO FOOTBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Marcus Joseph, Lafayette, Fr., DL, Carson, Calif./Windward School
*Joseph finished with three tackles and 1.0 sack for four yards in his collegiate debut against Colgate.
*The Carson, Calif. native was part of a Leopards’ defensive unit that held the Raiders’ offense to 55 rushing yards, the fewest the team has allowed since 2018. Lafayette’s defense also limited Colgate to 3-of-11 on third downs.
*Joseph and the Leopards defense held Colgate to 10 points, the fewest they have given up to the Raiders since 2006.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Malik Hamm, Lafayette, Jr., DL, Baltimore, Md./City College
*Hamm made seven tackles and 1.0 TFL of six yards while helping the Leopards’ defense limit Colgate to 55 yards rushing and 10 points in a 24-10 victory. 
 
Jeffrey Kordenbrock, Lafayette, Sr., K/P, Glenelg, Md./Calvert Hall
* Kordenbrock handled placekicking, kickoff and punt duties for the Leopards. He connected on a 25-yard field goal attempt, punted three times for an average of 39 yards and had three kickoffs go for touchbacks.
 
TyGee Leach, Lehigh, So., DB, Norristown, Pa./Malvern Prep
*Leach set a career-high with nine tackles, 2.0 TFLs, and his first career interception, which he returned for 15 yards to set up Lehigh’s first-quarter field goal.
