NAPLES, Fla. – The No. 8 Texas men’s golf team sits in third place, two shots back of leaders Oklahoma, through two rounds at the Calusa Cup. The Longhorns fired a 3-under 285 in Monday’s second round to move up in the team standings.
Individually, juniors Cole Hammer and Pierceson Coody sit atop the leaderboard in a tie for first and solo third place, respectively. Hammer is 4-under through two rounds, with Coody one shot back at 3-under par.
Hammer opened his week with a 1-under 71 on Sunday, and followed it up with a solid 3-under 69 on Monday. After a bogey at the first, Hammer recorded three birdies at the second, fifth and ninth holes on his opening nine. He bogeyed the 10th hole as well, rattled off four-straight pars and then birdied the 15th and 17th holes on his closing stretch.
Coody’s first two rounds nearly mirrored Hammer’s, posting an even-par 72 followed by a 3-under 69. He started with two birdies in his first three holes, and added two more at the eighth and 18th holes with only a lone bogey – a four on the par-three seventh – representing the only blemish on his card Monday.
Coody has been on a tear over the past month for Texas since winning the George Hannon Collegiate, his first collegiate victory, in Austin over spring break. He followed up his win with a second-place finish at the N.I.T. in Tucson, Ariz. later that same week. Coody is 27-under par over his last eight rounds, dating back to the start of the Hannon Collegiate, entering Tuesday’s final round in Florida.
The Longhorns get the final round of the Calusa Cup underway on Tuesday morning at 8:19 a.m. CT. Live results will be available throughout the day on Golfstat.com.
