ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T football players Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) and Justin Onwugbufor (Wichita, KS/Northwest) were named Monday as recipients of Great Lakes Valley Conference “Player of the Week” honors following the Miners’ season-opening 49-28 win Saturday at William Jewell.
Moya rushed for a career-high 143 yards on 10 carries (10.2 yards per carry) and scored two touchdowns in the contest. He opened the game with a 70-yard run on S&T’s first play from scrimmage and closed that opening drive that covered 98 yards with a two-yard scoring run. Moya’s second touchdown came on a three-yard run in the third quarter that tied the game at 28 as the Miners outscored the Cardinals 35-0 in the second half.
The 143 yards were the most by a Miner running back in a season opener since 2001.
Onwugbufor had five tackles, including four solo stops and had one of the key defensive plays in the victory. With the Miners up by seven in the fourth quarter and Jewell at the S&T six-yard line, the Miner defense forced a fumble and Onwugbufor returned it 93 yards for a touchdown to give the Miners a two-score lead. In addition, he had one pass breakup in the contest. The runback was the longest fumble return in school history and second-longest in conference history.
The Miners will play their home opener Saturday against Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
