Misfiring Arsenal lack an identity | Sport

When Willian replaced Thomas Partey in the 75th minute Arsenal had three defenders and six wide players on the field as Mikel Arteta went all out to peg back Aston Villa after Ollie Watkins had given the home side the lead inside the first two minutes. Yet Arsenal failed to create any clear opportunities — Martin Odegaard, on loan from Real Madrid, blasted the best of them over the bar five minutes from the end. The statistics afterwards did not reflect well on Arteta’s side: Arsenal had 66 per cent of the possession but only three shots on target, whereas Villa managed to conjure up eight shots on target from their meagre supply of the ball.
