The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team (4-3, 3-3 BWC) will revisit southern California this week to compete in the Big West Men’s Tennis Championship, which runs Friday, April 30 to Sunday, May 2 at the Irvine Great Park in Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors enter as the No. 4 seed and will kick off the tournament playing against fifth-seeded UC Davis in a first round match Friday, April 30 at 12:00 p.m. PT. The teams met two weeks prior in Honolulu where Hawai’i concluded the regular season with a 4-3 victory. Sophomore Simao Telo Alves clinched the match for the Warriors on the No. 6 court.

UH enters the tournament having won their last two matches with No. 1 player Andre Ilagan at the forefront. Freshman Axel Labrunie leads the Warriors in singles wins with a 6-1 record playing on the No. 4 court, losing only one match the entire season. Meanwhile, Ilagan and Tristan Martins have accumulated five wins each while playing on the No. 1 and No. 5 & 6 courts, respectively. In doubles, senior Lucas Labrunie and Ilagan lead the team with a 5-1 mark while playing on the No. 1 court.

Hawai’i’s best finish at the Big West Tournament was second place in 2014. The regular season champions and No. 1 seed fell to Cal Poly, 4-1 in the finals. Prior to joining the Big West, the Warriors repeatedly won Western Athletic Conference championship titles from 2008 to 2010 led by decorated UH player Dennis Lajola.

The ‘Bows enter the 2021 tournament with a 4-3 overall record and a 3-3 Big West mark, while an experienced UC Davis team (8-10, BWC 2-4) will try to rebound after a loss to UC Irvine on April 24. The winner will move on to the semifinals to meet top-seeded Cal Poly Saturday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m. PT.
