Men’s Tennis Drops Match at Furman on Sunday Afternoon

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped a 7-0 decision to the Furman Paladins on Saturday afternoon.
“The better team won but we are close, we just need to keep preparing and getting matches so we will be a lot better come February,” said Head Coach Mike Griffith. “We have two teams in doubles playing well and one getting another win.”
The afternoon started with the Gardner-Webb #2 pair of Breno Plentz and Alex Griffiths defeating Furman’s Ivan Mitric and Drew Singerman 6-1.
In the #1 doubles match, Furman’s Jake Bhangdia and James Roelofse topped Gardner-Webb’s Chrisjan Van Wyk and Sebastian Harris 6-3. Furman’s Henrik Atlevi and Emil Westling won the doubles point after winning in the #3 flight 6-4 over Connor Enslin and Victor Putter.
Furman won the first three singles matches which lead to the match-clinching point for the team’s victory. Atlevi defeated Enslin in the #3 flight 6-3, 6-4. Shortly after the match’s conclusion, Furman’s Singerman won over Harris, 6-0, 6-3 in the #4 position. Bhangdia won the match from the #2 flight with a close victory over Putter 7-6(5), 6-2.
Furman built on their lead in the #5 position with Westing’s win over Van Wyk 6-1, 6-0. In a hard-fought match in the top-seeded matchup, Mitric defeated Plentz 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-2.
The day ended with the #6 match where Roelofse preventing a potential comeback by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Griffiths in the second set 6-3, 7-6(7) to give Furman the 7-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb falls to 0-2 on the season with their next competition is the UNC Asheville Tournament from February 6th and 7th.
