Men’s Golf Finishes Fifth, Hunter Top 3 at Mountaineer Invitational

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va.—The Chattanooga Mocs finished fifth Tuesday at the Mountaineer Invitational. The Mocs shot 299 over the final 18 to complete the two-day, 54-hole event with a total of 900.
Gabe Hunter shot 71 to lead the way. They got 75s from A.J. Lintunen and Matt Smith with the addition of 78 by Paul Conroy and Connor Nolan. Alex Cobb ended with 84.
Hunter tied for third overall finishing with 3-over 219 leading three in the top 25. Lintunen tied for 13th at 224 ahead of Smith’s 228 tying for 25th. Conroy and Nolan both ended with 233 while Cobb shot 244.
West Virginia captured its own event with a final round 281 propelling it to a 12-stroke victory at 873. Southern Miss was second followed by Georgia Southern (892) and Loyola Maryland (897) just ahead of Chattanooga. UConn was sixth at 905. The Mountaineers’ Mark Goetz fired 65 today for a 12-under 204 to capture medalist honors.
The three “at home: Mocs were also in action the last two days. The trio of Oliver Simonsen, Leon Bader and Dominic Jones competed at Dalton State’s Roadrunner Classic at The Farm. Simonsen tied for 12th with a 3-over 219 to lead the group with scores of 72, 73 and 74. Bader was 25th as his 71, 75 and 79 totaled 225. Jones’ 240 was made up of 79, 85 and 76.
Chattanooga begins postseason play next week at the Southern Conference Championships. Eight programs converge on Reynolds Lake Oconee tackling its Oconee Course layout. There are 36 holes on Monday, April 19, followed by a final 18 on Tuesday.
