Men’s Golf Edges Out Roanoke

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University men’s golf team hosted their first home competition Thursday afternoon at Vista Links Golf Course, taking down Roanoke College with a 292 overall score and Charles Price taking the top spot.

With the Knights’ shooting 292, Southern Virginia broke its previous team record by 13 strokes previously collected at the 2019-2020 VSGA Intercollegiate with a 305 (+17) overall.

“I’m proud of our team rising in tough conditions to smash our team-low round,” said head coach Blair Garner. “Vista Links from the tips is quite a challenge, which makes our round even that more outstanding.”

Price impressed, shooting 69 to finish first at the dual after catching fire with five birdies on the back. Niko Vui followed closely, coming in second finishing with a 71 overall following a steady performance and a couple of par saves. Justin Grenier and Michael Donnelly of Roanoke rounded out the top three, tying for third shooting 75.

Knights’ trio consisting of Nathan Presslar, Jarrett Fultz, and Jake Hanchett finished with a 76, tying for the fifth-place spot. Bud Oettli capped off the top-10 shooting 77, good for an eighth-place tie.

“It was great to be able to play an official match on our home course,” concluded Coach Garner. “This was the first home competition in the program’s DIII era, and I hope it will not be our last.”

Southern Virginia will continue its season, taking on Shenandoah at the Winchester Country Club Monday, March 29.
