Meet the 2021 Associated Press Division 2 girls basketball All-State team

Presenting the 2021 Associated Press Division 2 high school girls basketball All-State team, as selected by a panel of 11 sports writers from across Michigan.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

DAMIYA HAGEMANN, DETROIT EDISON, Sr.

On the court, there was no stopping Hagemann. The 5-foot-7 guard was a dazzling performer for her powerhouse team, leading Edison to an undefeated 10-0 season. She tallied 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 steals and an eye-popping 9.9 assists per game while becoming the third straight Edison senior to garner the Miss Basketball award. Unfortunately, Hagemann and her teammates were stopped for off-the-court reasons, as coronavirus issues forced Edison to withdraw from postseason play. The game goes on for Hagemann, however, as she takes her talents to Michigan State University.

ASHLEY BOWER, PORTLAND, Jr.

In case anybody didn’t catch Bower in action during a sensational junior campaign, she put on a stunning show for all to see in the state final. Her 20-point performance vaulted Portland to a 52-32 win over Newaygo for the Division 2 championship. Bower was tough all year, registering 19.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.0 assists per game. She shot 52.2% from the floor and 76% from the free-throw line.

Just a sophomore, the 6-foot-1 standout figures to be a force in the years to come. She is imposing in the paint while notching 15.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. But she is also a skilled 3-point marksman, making her virtually impossible to defend. Honorable mention All-State as a freshman, she led Frankenmuth to a second straight regional final this season.

A.J. EDIGER, HAMILTON, Sr.

A double-double machine, she can’t be stopped under the boards as the go-getting piles up the rebounds and the points. She averaged 22.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest and was also goo for 3.0 steals, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks. She is Big Ten-bound after signing with Iowa.

Nouvel at Standish-Sterling

MACEY FEGAN, STANDISH-STERLING, So.

Filled with promise and potential, Fegan is also fantastic in the here and now. The 5-foot-10 sophomore can electrify the scoreboard, as she did with a school-record 41-point effort. She averaged 23.1 points, connecting on 57.5% from the field and 74.0% from the line. She notched 3.5 steals and 3.0 assists per game while leading the Panthers to a 16-4 mark. She was honorable mention a year ago.

NICOLE KAMIN, ESCANABA, Sr.

Good luck stopping this playmaker, who powered Escanaba to its first regional championship in school history. The Upper Peninsula Dream Teamer delivered 24.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game while connecting on 86% from the free-throw line. A 1,000-point scorer for her prep career, she takes her game to Grand Valley State University next year.

ABBEY KIMBALL, GRAND RAPIDS WEST CATHOLIC, Jr.

A whirlwind of a player, she propelled her team to the regional final in undefeated fashion. The junior posted 22.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game. She displayed her court smarts with a 3:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. She is verbally committed to Michigan State University.

ADELYN MOORE, CARO, So.

A bundle of energy and basketball skills, she dominates the action with her attack-minded game. The Thumb-area Player of the Year, she put up monstrous numbers with 21.7 points and 14.3 rebounds per game. She also notched 5.6 steals and 2.7 assists. She garnered honorable mention a year ago as a freshman.

TAYLOR WALTON, HARPER WOODS CHANDLER PARK, Sr.

An explosive athlete who could take over a game in the blink of an eye, her speed and agility made her a must-see player. She scored 14.8 points per game while ripping down a jaw-dropping 16.5 rebounds. She came up big against some big competition, going for 29 points and 24 rebounds against Arbor Prep. The 5-foot-9 senior led her team to a 15-2 campaign.

A pivotal part of the Edison powerhouse, she helped her team to an undefeated 10-0 campaign. The 6-foot junior guard tore through the opposition for 19.7 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. She added 3.5 steals per contest. The Division I recruit has another prep season in front of her.

JASON HAID, PORTLAND

The fifth-year coach helped the Raiders make history this season with their first state championship. He guided his squad to the Capital Area White crown then ran the table in the postseason, finishing with a 20-2 record. He owns a 70-42 record during his tenure at Portland.
