Following his latest goalscoring performance, Luis Suarez has broken a longstanding LaLiga record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Suarez maintained his remarkable form in front of goal this season when he netted a brace either side of half time in Los Colchoneros’ 2-2 LaLiga draw with Celta Vigo on Monday, and he has now scored seven goals in his last four matches.
In doing so, the Uruguay international extended his lead at the top of the league’s goalscoring charts for the season with 16 goals in 17 appearances, which simultaneously saw him break a record set by former Real Madrid star Ronaldo in 2009.
No player in the competition’s modern history has reached 16 goals in a faster period time for a new club than Suarez has done for Atletico this season, with the 34-year-old achieving the feat following his move from FC Barcelona at the start of the campaign.
The 2015/16 Pichichi winner is now three goals clear of Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri and former Barca teammate Lionel Messi in the race for this season’s award, while his exploits have also fired Diego Simeone’s side eight points clear at the top of the log, with a game in hand.
