HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) — More than 20 disc golf players gathered Saturday morning at Huckleberry Park in Hannibal for the 15th annual Ice Bowl.
The motto of the tournament is ‘no whimps or whiners’, and a little snow wasn’t stopping this tournament.
Mary Lynne Richards, from Hannibal Parks and Recreation, said participants come from all over to play.
“From Iowa, St. Louis, Illinois they are from all over,” Richards said. “A lot of Hannibal people as well, they come to play disc golf it’s a national tournament.”
Richards said the proceeds from the tournament go right back to the community, to provide backpacks of food to children in need.
“The great thing about this tournament is that it provides all proceeds to the buddy pack program,” she said. “It’s just a way to give back to the community.”
Eric Dochterman has been disc golfing for 22-years.
He said for him the tournament is a no-brainer because it gives him the chance to give back.”
“Giving back the community is a very big aspect of why we do this. As disc golfers of course we love to play the game. But, to help locally is one of our missions.”
Dochterman said disc golf is something everyone should check out.
“We like to help people get into the game cause it’s such a good game. It’s good for exercise and for families.”
The fee was $10 and proceeds will go to the Buddy Pack program, which benefits more than 500 Marion County schoolchildren.
The program allows children to take home backpacks full of free food each Friday.
