Seven different managers and 13 years ago, Tottenham Hotspur employed a cup expert to blow the dust off the trophy cabinet door. The plan came together startlingly fast. London football, not long disengaged from the Special One, celebrated the Wembley crowning of a “Special Juan”. Or, in another popular rhyme of the time, saw a firm-jawed, clear-sighted conjurer waving a “Magic Juande”.

Juande Ramos, now 66, recalls in vivid detail the League Cup final of 2008 — Spurs 2, Chelsea 1, after extra time — as a “joyful, positive day”, but regrets that it was not a watershed, a turning point in the club’s notoriously difficult modern relationship with trophies. The longer that extends, the more stellar Ramos’s short time as the Spurs manager appears.
