Red Hawks Knocked off by Wolverines in Final Meeting

Montclair, NJ – Junior linebacker Mike Brewer returned an interception 76 yards for a touchdown that proved big in the end as Wesley College got past Montclair State, 20-13 at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Quarterbacks Brady Walters and Akil Woods each rushed for a touchdown as the Wolverines, playing their final season, evened their record at 1-1. Senior quarterback JA’QUILL BURCH threw for 215 yards and ran for a score for MSU, which is also 1-1 in the abbreviated spring season.

The Wolverines grabbed a 7-0 lead near the end of the first quarter with a seven-play, 61-yard drive. Walters connected with Mike Credle for 11 yards on a third-down to keep the drive with Latrell McCants acing 28 yards down to the MSU 28. McCants added a 16-yard scamper around the left sideline down to the MSU 2 before Woods came on and plowed ahead for the final yardage and the first score of the game.

Montclair State looked to answer as it pushed the ball deep into Wesley territory. Burch found MATT SPATUCCI for 27 yards down to the Wolverine 36. A penalty against Wesley placed the ball at the 26, however, Brewer ended the MSU threat as he stepped in front of a Burch throw at the 24 and raced down the left sideline for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead as the first quarter expired.

MSU cut that lead down on its next touch of the ball going seven plays and 65 yards in just under four minutes. ABELLANY MENDEZ had a 13-yard run and Burch found BRIAN KOWALCZYK twice for 33 yards, the latter a 20-yard completion down the Wesley 6. Mendez ran it from there making the score 14-6 with 11:11 to go before halftime.

The score stayed that way until midway through the third when the Wolverines put together an 86-yard drive. Walters capped that off with a 19-yard run off a scramble giving Wesley a 20-6 advantage.

Montclair pulled within seven at the beginning of the fourth as Burch matched Walters for QB scramble touchdowns, racing in from nine yards out with 10:34 to go. The Red Hawks then came up with the big defensive play as AUSTIN SMITH sacked Walters, forcing a fumble that was recovered by BRENNAN RAY at the Wesley 26. But Montclair couldn’t cash in on the turnover and the drive ended with missed a 48-yard field goal attempt.

Montclair State would get two more opportunities to tie the game, however, Wesley was able to come up with defensive stops each time to preserve the win.

Mendez finished with 61 yards on 16 carries and also had five receptions out of the backfield for MSU. CLARENCE WILKINS and Kowalczyk had three catches apiece. Cornerback JALEN HARRIS totaled 11 tackles along with a breakup while linebacker MICHAEL STEFKOVICH adding 10.

The Red Hawks will now have the week off and return for their final game on Friday, April 2 when they host William Paterson at 6:00 pm in a battle for the NJAC North Division title.
