EMU Tennis Set to Close Season at Home Against Buffalo

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team will begin the weekend at Bowling Green State University Friday, April 30, with a 1 p.m. start time. Eastern then returns home Sunday, May 2, to close out the regular season against the University at Buffalo. The match’s scheduled start time depends on weather. If the match is held outside, it competition will begin at 11 a.m. However, if it is inside the Chippewa Club, then it will be at 1 p.m. The Eagles will celebrate Senior Day following the contest with the Bulls.

Eastern (10-15; 1-11 MAC) suffered two tough, 3-4, Mid-American Conference losses last weekend at Western Michigan and against Miami (OH), April 23 and 25, respectively. Bowling Green (12-6; 8-4 MAC) enters the weekend coming off a conference win over Northern Illinois, April 23, 6-1. EMU will look to rebound after the first meeting against BGSU, April 9, where the Eagles were downed, 0-7.  Buffalo (7-9; 3-9 MAC) secured two 4-3 MAC wins last weekend against Toledo, April 23, and Northern Illinois, April 24. The Green and White will attempt to prevent the Bulls from winning both meetings this season, after falling 2-5, March 28, to the New York-based squad. 

The Eagles have two doubles pairings with double-digit wins this season. Primarily as No. 2, redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay CIty (Wright State)) lead the team with 15 wins. Redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) are second on the team after securing their 11th win at Western Michigan, April 23, 6-2. 

Pelayo and redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-L’Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) lead the squad in singles action, both having 15 wins in the No. 3 and 4 spot, respectively. It was Pommiers who reached 15 wins first, defeating her opponent at WMU,6-1, 6-7, 6-2, April 23. Pelayo tied for the team lead after downing her RedHawk opposition 6-1, 6-1, April 25. The only other Eagle with double-digit wins is Ganesan who has earned 12 wins split between the No. 2 and 3 spots. 

Eastern Michigan will honor three Eagles between the Buffalo and Ferris State matches Sunday, May 2, who graduated from EMU Sunday, April 25. The student-athletes to be honored are redshirt juniors Essence Eaton (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield Lathrup), Morgan Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.-Grace Academy (Marion Military Institution)), and redshirt sophomore Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-Ies Figueras Pacheco).
