Drive Shack drops plans for Bucktown golf range in Chicago

Drive Shack, a rival to Topgolf, in 2019 filed plans with the city for a three-story, 71,000-square-foot building on the 9.3-acre riverside parcel northeast of the reconfigured intersection of Damen, Elston and Fullerton avenues. Guests would drive balls from heated hitting bays and eat and drink, a golfer’s version of Pinstripes, part of a trend in the dining and entertainment business that has come to be known as “competitive socializing.”

Drive Shack would have leased the land from property owners Vienna Beef and Chicago-based Mark IV Realty. Sajovec did not know why the company decided not to move forward with the project.

“The property owner just let us know that Drive Shack decided against pursuing the project and didn’t provide a specific reason,” he wrote in the email.

Representatives of Drive Shack and Mark IV did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The website Chicago Golf Report first reported the news of Drive Shack’s decision.
