Daniel George Leads Men’s Golf in Season Debut at Savannah Harbor
Two Lancers sit in the top-20, and Longwood ended the day ninth in the 16 team field through 34 holes at the Invitational at Savannah Harbor on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Daniel George poured in nine birdies on Saturday, leading Longwood at -2 in a tie for seventh individually. Fellow sophomore Miles Parroco joined George in the top-20, as he sits at even par and a tie for 16th with 20 holes to play.
“For everything we have been through this past month, we did a lot of good things today,” said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. “Our putting was not good today—speed control hurt us really badly. I bet 80 percent of our shots lost were to three-putts. It’s been 4-5 months since we’ve seen greens with any speed, and we didn’t do a good job of adapting. We have 20 holes tomorrow to do a better job.”
Longwood’s sophomore-pair of Parroco and George, who both received Big South Freshman of the Week honors in their debut 2019-20 season, each rank tied for first in birdies through 34 holes, dropping in nine to tie Mercer’s Tyler Copp, who sits at the top of the individual leader board at -5. This included a stretch of four-consecutive birdies for Parroco on holes 12-15 in his second round, as he has picked up six of his nine birdies through just 16 holes in the second round.
George, making his spring season debut after appearing in three fall tournaments as a freshman, closed his first round with two consecutive birdies before opening the second round with three more in a row. The Ontario, Canada native has logged just three bogeys to five birdies in 16 round two holes, and sits just three strokes back of the lead.
“Dan made a lot in the 6-15 foot range,” added Fillman on George. “He putted well all day.”
Freshman Nick Rakes made his collegiate debut on Saturday, currently sitting at +6 in a tie for 56th. The Evington, Va. native has made four birdies in his first tournament as Lancer, firing a two-over 74 in his debut round.
As a team, Longwood finished Saturday’s action +10 and in ninth place, just eight strokes back of fifth in a crowded leader board. They have done the majority of their damage on par threes, as they rank fifth in the field with a 3.06 par-three scoring average.
The Lancers will wrap up play in Savannah Sunday, Feb. 21 as they will wrap up their final two holes of the second round and complete the third. Follow along live at golfstat.com for the latest updates on the course.
