The Pac-12 conference announced Monday that Washington State freshman Charlisse Leger-Walker was named the conference Freshman of the Year. She is just the second Cougar to be named winner of the award following Alke Dietel who won the award following the 1997-98 season.

The freshman guard from Waikato, New Zealand was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week seven times this season, tying Kelsey Plum for second most in conference history. After missing out on the award for the first two weeks of the season, she would go on to win the award seven of the next ten weeks including a stretch of three consecutive weeks.

Leger-Walker finished the regular season with 19.4 points, 2.3 steals, 3.2 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game. She also was the first freshman in Pac-12 women’s basketball history to lead the conference in total points scored with 407. She fell just shy of becoming the first freshman in conference history to win the regular season scoring title as Aari McDonald of Arizona finished just a few percentage points higher than Leger-Walker.

“We’re thrilled for Charlisse… She has distinguished herself as one of America’s best players in a conference filled with greatness” – Kamie Ethridge

She would put up a career high 29-points three times this season and scored in double digits in every game except two (both of these games came against Stanford) – including her first 12 games.

Washington State fans knew early on that she was special as she put up 20 points in three of her first four games including dropping 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 assists, and 4 steals in the first game against Washington. She followed that performance up with 29 points, 8 rebounds, a block, 5 assists, and 3 steals against Idaho in the second game of the season.

On top of being named Pac-12 Freshman of the year, she was also named to the All-Pac-12 team as well as the All-Pac-12 Freshman team on Monday.

Leger-Walker and the Cougars will begin post-season play on Wednesday when they take on 10th seeded Utah in the Pac-12 Tournament. That game can be seen on Pac-12 Networks at 5:00 pm. Listed as one of the “last four teams out” the Cougars will need a strong performance in the conference tournament if they hope to make it to the NCAA Tournament.
