Black & Blue Is Back: After missing the 2020 edition due to the coronavirus pandemic, the annual rivalry match between the Long Beach State and UC Irvine women’s teams made its return this week. The seventh edition of the challenge took place at Tierjas Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita for one round and then El Dorado Park on the ensuing day.
The Beach came away with the win over the two-day event, winning by nine strokes over their rival from Orange County. The play 6 score 5 format led to a two-day total of 746 for LBSU, outlasting the 755 carded by the Anteaters. Holland Shourds led the way for the Beach, carding a two-over 74 on the second day for low round honors.
Men Compete In Cowboy Country: Laramie, Wyoming was the locale to find five men’s teams last week to kick off the month of April, as they competed in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. The top finisher from the league was UC Davis as it tied for sixth in the 23-team, collectively shooting an 8-under 856. The team was led by Thomas Hutchinson who carded a 215 (-1) over the three-round event, shooting a low round of 71 to open the tournament.
The top finish for an individual from the Big West was Cal State Fullerton’s Garrett Boe, finishing in a tie for 24th after a three round total of 214. Boe was consistent throughout the tourney as he carded a total of 214 (-2).
Warmup Coming For Women’s Golf: Following the Black & Blue Challenge, one more tournament is in the cards on the women’s golf schedule before the Championship comes calling. Cal Poly, CSUN, Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Riverside are slated to compete in the Fresno State Classic April 12-14.
Journey To El Macero (And Wildhorse): The UC Davis men return back home to close out its regular season with the El Macero Classic April 10-12, an event that will have a 15-team field including the Aggies. UCD will also concurrently host an event for individuals only at nearby Wildhorse Golf Club, located just four miles away from the event at El Macero. The course at the El Macero Country Club will play at par 72 and 7,110 yards. The concurrently run Wildhorse Individual Tournament will play at par 72 and 6,828 yards.
Big West Championship Low Down: This year the Big West Women’s Golf Championship is slated for April 19-21 at the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif. The men’s championship takes place at the La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif., May 2-4. Both events will not allow spectators to be in attendance.
