After three of the most significant days in football’s recent history, attentions will actually turn back to the pitch on Wednesday as Manchester City take on Aston Villa.

City became the first club to officially withdraw with the reviled European Super League on Tuesday, as the proposed break away competition was left in tatters just 48 hours after its inception with only Real Madrid and Barcelona left standing.

Though it feels remarkably irrelevant after such a chaotic week, the Blues will hopefully be free of all distractions as aim to return to winning ways at Villa Park.

Pep Guardiola’s side’s dreams of a quadruple were dashed on Saturday after a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final and City must be careful not to slip up and risk losing an almost guaranteed Premier League title.

Manchester United are eight points behind City with six games remaining and anything less than a win against Villa will be certain to galvanise the red half of Manchester for the run-in.

City line-up: Ederson, Walker, Zinchenko, Dias, Stones, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Bernardo, Foden, Jesus, Mahrez

Subs: Steffen, Ake, Laporte, Mendy, Cancelo, Garcia, Fernandinho, Sterling, Torres
