Another DC option from NFL emerges
LSU football is in no hurry to hire a replacement for defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.
Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron said this week that he wanted to nail down his offensive hires (Jake Peetz and DJ Mangas) before focusing on replacing Pelini.
LSU made a run at Marcus Freeman, but he decided to leave the Cincinnati Bearcats to become the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame.
Now that Freeman is off the table, the Tigers are taking their time in hiring a new defensive coordinator.
One reason LSU could be taking its time is so they can interview some NFL assistants.
LSU football could be eying NFL options
I mentioned earlier this week that New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen could be an option to replace Pelini. Nielsen has extensive connections to Coach O.
That might not be the only NFL option that LSU could show interest in, either.
Shea Dixon, who covers the Tigers for 247Sports, reported on Friday that Los Angeles Rams linebackers coach/assistant head coach Joe Barry could be an option for LSU.
Barry and Orgeron coached together at USC in 2010.
The Colorado native was the defensive coordinator for the Washington Football Team from 2015-2016. He’s been with the Rams since 2017.
I think Orgeron would ultimately prefer Nielsen. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Coach O at least has some conversations with Barry.
This probably wouldn’t be the most exciting option for LSU. But anyone with NFL experience would probably be a good fit to be the Tigers’ next defensive coordinator.
The Rams are still playing, so if an interview happens it will have to wait until at least after this weekend.
