AHSAA tennis champs decided in 7A, 4A/5A, 1A/3A play

Spain Park’s boys and Auburn’s girls won the Class 7A tennis titles on Tuesday in Montgomery while Madison Academy’s boys, St. John Paul II’s girls won the 4A/5A championships and Houston Academy’s boys and St. Luke’s Episcopal’s girls captured the 1A/3A crowns in Mobile.
The Class 6A titles will be decided Thursday and Friday in Mobile.
Spain Park’s championship was the Jaguars’ second and their first since 2007. Spain Park took two singles and two doubles finals to finish with 43 points over Hoover and Huntsville, who tied for second with 34 points apiece.
Spain Park’s Jake Wilson won the No. 1 singles, topping Parker Free of Bob Jones in the finals, 6-1, 6-2. Jon Kendrick took the No. 5 singles title. Wilson and Walker Jackson won the No. 2 doubles for the Jaguars and Benton Cate and Sam Wasko won at No. 3.
Auburn’s girls’ win in 7A came in a playoff with second-place Vestavia Hills. The two teams finished with 30 points apiece at the end of the regular competition with Hoover and Florence tied for third. Auburn won one of the two playoff singles matches and the doubles match to claim the Tigers’ first tennis crown.
Camilla Bosman won the No. 3 singles for Auburn and Kathryn Kirkland won the No. 5 singles. Bosman and Jane League took the No. 1 doubles title, beating Claudia Catar and Emily Grubach of Fairhope, 6-4, 6-3.
In 4A/5A boys’ play, Madison Academy beat LAMP of Montgomery in a playoff to take the title, the first for the Mustangs’ boys’ squad. Montgomery Academy won the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles titles while LAMP took 2, 4 and 6. LAMP’s Edward Lee and Juno Jeon won the No. 1 doubles final to force the playoff.
St. John Paul II won three singles titles and one doubles championship to win the team crown with 63 points in 4A/5A girls’ play. Altamont finished second with 55 points. Russellville was third with 37.
Houston Academy’s boys won the 1A/3A title with 63 points, the third straight championship for the Raiders and fourth overall. Second-place Westminster-Oak Mountain finished with 31 points and Catholic-Montgomery was third with 22.
St. Luke’s Episcopal topped Donoho 61-36 to take the girls’ 1A/3A championship. The Wildcats won five singles titles and two doubles championships. Bayside Academy took the No. 1 singles title when Claire Prickett topped Donoho’s Claire Hillman 6-3, 6-3.
